My Proudest Moment as a PrEP Navigator
Becoming a PrEP Navigator in itself was a proud moment for me. Learning about HIV and the challenges that can come with a positive status, the effects of HIV on the African American community, and how to prevent the spread of HIV has always been fascinating to me. What I’ve enjoyed most about this role is talking to community members about HIV prevention in a shame-free environment. I have learned an incredible amount during the past year, and it’s been a humbling experience transitioning my former public relations career into health care.
Attending Cleveland Pride last June was my proudest moment so far. It was my first time at Pride, and the event was awesome! The costumes and creativity were inspiring, and I enjoyed seeing all of Cleveland’s diverse LGBTQ supporters. It was a perfect day, the music was energetic and fun, and everyone there greeted one another with a smile, laugh, hug, or a dance. My colleagues and I talked about PrEP to all the attendees and handed out goodies for people to enjoy. Unity was the theme of the day.

I remember feeling a hint of fear as we passed by protesters during the parade—I had never seen people yelling like that in person—it felt quite different from when I had seen the event on TV. And true to the parade and celebration’s name, attendees danced and sang with Pride and love. It was beautiful. I recognized my privilege and shortcomings as I became more aware of LGBTQ community member struggles.
To me, everyone there was powerful and brave, and I was proud to be their ally.
